What is Lore?

How local files, saved revisions and the shared server fit together.

Version control, for the work you make

A world is more than source code. It can contain scenes, textures, audio and other large files. Lore is an open-source version-control system from Epic Games, designed with binary assets in mind. It records how a project changes so contributors can work from a shared history.

Your machine and the shared server

Your working tree is the directory you edit. A commit records a revision locally; a push sends that revision to the server. Other contributors sync with the server to receive shared work. A local commit and a published change are two different steps.

A useful checkpoint

“I committed it” means you saved a local revision. “I pushed it” means you sent it to the shared server.

Coming from Git?

Some commands will feel familiar, but Lore has its own storage model and a server-centred collaboration workflow. Use lore sync to bring in remote changes. Learn the Lore commands rather than substituting Git commands by habit.

Where Halvor fits

Halvor is the project home we are building around Lore: a browser experience for discovering projects and following changes. Lore is the version-control foundation underneath it. Halvor is independent of Epic Games, and its public preview is still being prepared.

You can start learning Lore today using an official local demo, without waiting for a Halvor account.
